Hi Christine,

In my experience with educational video, the most interesting projects and programs are ones that help students to produce their own videos. TED Talks and Khan Academy are fine, but MathTrainTV and Super Awesome Sylvia’s Mini Maker Shows are a more active, “learn by doing” approach. The main program that my iEARN colleagues and I help support is Adobe Youth Voices and World Youth News/ MDG Student Reporting Labseffort with UNICEF and PBSNewsHour & youth video journalists.

Happy to discuss with you and others how these programs are meeting the learning needs of students worldwide.

Thanks, Carol (and I’d love to hear about your experiences coming to journalism, and what you’ve thought about it).

I’d like to propose this as a discussion, as I’m just learning myself some of the details of how a few people are also starting to look at this.

You raise good questions! It seems there are economic motivators (news organizations measure success in certain ways, which get plumped by “first hit” breaking news), system motivators (the low barrier to seeing a single report through social media and the web in general, the high barrier in confirming it), social science hurdles (balancing anonymity/pseudonymity concerns against reputation/trust), and things I’m sure I’m blanking on at the moment. Most, if not all, of these were problematic before the internets, but some are now worse.

I’d like to keep focus on 1) the use cases of of journalists w/r/t social media (breaking events? surfacing trends? cultivating individual sources? crowdsourcing?), b) their user needs towards verification (what raises confidence, what lowers it), iii) what can be designed into a system that is either automated or leverages humans to help raise confidence as defined in b).

Dan, will you be leading a talk on this? As a fairly new journalist (2 years), I find this topic very interesting and would like to explore it further. I was not trained to do old school journalism, but was raised reading it. I feel that instant reporting–i.e. using social media to spread the news as quickly as possible–has often resulted in sloppy and inaccurate reporting that isn’t of much benefit. But what can we do when everyone thinks they can write/report/spread information without bothering to do a background check on the strands of information they’ve picked up?

I’d love to get an introduction to web-archiving. I working on a “digital critical edition” that is “progressively” published. i.e. can be updated and perfected as more readers review it, use it, and make comments. Having an archive system (similar to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) would really help with stable citations, even as new editions emerge.

I’m very interested in this issue. I just collected 28GB of TIFFs from the archives. Right now it is organized only by the directory structure. I will be loading converted PDFs into Zotero as I cite documents, but how do I manage ALL the data? My preference would be to not have to learn another database, but if there were sufficient benefits…

This is a great topic. I also created an Access database to organized a particular subset of my dissertation research notes–rather amateurish and with mixed results, but also promising in some ways. I’d be most interested in figuring out a kind of template for project specific notes DBs.

@Anne Trubek, you can take BART from SFO to several other parts of the Bay Area and maybe carpool from there. It opens up a lot of housing options without having to rent a car.

This should be a good experience– custom translators can really be a game-changer for anyone working significantly with online resources. I’d focus on showing that translators can be a quick way to automate any kind of tedious work online, especially if it, as DH people often find, involves harvesting a lot from one resource. It even ties in with web archiving, in that basic translators can stand in for web archiving tools for people whose interests are relatively limited in scope.

I’d love to come up to the Bay Area to drop in, but I’m busy next weekend. I could run an encore edition here in SoCal if there’s interest.

Eric – as you probably know, Avram gave very effective translator writing courses based on your framework – that’s pretty doable with pretty limited coding experience. I wouldn’t try to teach non-framework translators unless you have a lot of time.

Hi Anne, The hotel situation is tough due to a music festival that weekend. But if you check the parking and transportation page, there are some discussions of carpooling — you might still be able to avoid renting a car.

Thanks for the Bridge School heads up. That’s how we roll at THATCamp Bay Area… we lined up Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters (on Sunday), Eddie Vedder and the like within about 300 yards of THATCamp this year. The show starts at 5pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday. Guess that explains why the hotels may be hard to come by.

Also, this is not directly related to the event, but a benefit concert for the Bridge School (organized by Neil and Pegi Young) will be happening right after THATCamp on Saturday at a nearby park.
